strContentBuffer1976 += '

The LECOM School of Pharmacy is eager to establish long-term relationships with experienced pharmacists willing to convey professional knowledge and provide quality mentoring for student pharmacists. The need for on-site experiential education preceptors is becoming urgent due to the demand for new pharmacists, enrollment growth at an increasing number of pharmacy schools, and the demands of the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum.

Some of the same factors are reducing available mentors. Potential preceptors are becoming pharmacy school faculty members. Fewer mentors are available when practitioners face the challenge of an increasingly heavy workload and feel that they cannot devote time to teaching.

Prior to the doctor of pharmacy curriculum, schools typically required two to three advanced practice experiences per student. Most pharmacy schools now require between 5 and 10 advanced practice experiences per student, which typically vary in length from 4 to 6 weeks. For every 100 students, required advanced experiences have increased from 300 per year to 1,000 per year.

The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education now requires introductory practice experiences with the addition of 300-500 more sites and preceptors for each school. Combining the increased need for pharmacists with the increased need for educational opportunities creates many challenges for schools. The LECOM School of Pharmacy is seeking quality preceptors to fulfill all of the experiential needs for future pharmacy professionals.

If you are interested in becoming a preceptor for our pharmacy students, please contact:

Dr. Randall Heemer
Director of Experiential Education
1858 W.
